I admit, I'm not a very good sleeper. I even put out an album with a friend of mine called "Insomniax", and my friend sampled Nas saying "I never sleep, cuz sleep is the cousin of death". But I like to sleep, its fun and relaxing. I take about one nap a year and if feels great.
For many years, I would drink a few beers before going to bed, but I didn't think that was too good a habit to get into, so I would try going to bed early and then waking up super early. When doing so, I also tried to keep a very strict regimen on the timing of when I would go to bed to build up a rhythm over time. That method isn't very practical though, because sometimes you might want to stay up and watch a movie or play Scrabble.
After I stopped drinking to get to sleep, I started taking melatonin, which worked for awhile but doesn't have an effect anymore. I haven't taken it in awhile, and I can't help but be a little skeptical about it because of the lack up studies on the matter.
Nowadays, I'm ending up staying up very late and pulling "all-nighters" causing myself to get really sleepy. That is nice but its kind of extreme, and I don't think a very good habit for the near future. I'd like to get back going to the gym and getting more exercise as that seems to help get me to fall asleep more comfortably.
As a side note, my wife uses a white noise generator to fall asleep. We bought a nice one for $50 and it is built to last a lifetime. I've heard different theories about how and why this works to help fall asleep, from blocking out background noise to helping the brain filter out distractions and relax. It helps me a little bit, and every bit helps! Perhaps over time it will help out more and more!
